Mattress and bed sizes: how to choose the right one?
In short
One person is comfortable on a 90–120 cm wide mattress, a couple needs at least 160 cm. The mattress should be about 20 cm longer than the tallest sleeper, so the most common length is 200 cm. The mattress must match the inside dimensions of the bed frame exactly.
The right mattress size matters as much as its firmness: on a mattress that is too narrow or too short the body cannot fully relax. Here is how to choose.
Standard sizes
- 80x200 and 90x200 cm – a single bed for a child, a teenager or a guest room.
- 120x200 cm – a roomy single bed for one adult.
- 140x200 cm – the smallest double; often tight for a couple.
- 160x200 cm – the most popular size for couples.
- 180x200 and 200x200 cm – the most room for two, especially if children or pets join you.
How wide?
One person sleeps comfortably on 90–120 cm. For a couple we recommend at least 160 cm – that gives each of you about 80 cm, like a single bed. If one of you tosses and turns a lot or you sleep with a child, go for 180 cm.
How long?
The mattress should be about 20 cm longer than the tallest sleeper. Up to about 180 cm of height, 200 cm is enough; taller people should consider 210–220 cm.
Mattress height
Most mattresses are 18–25 cm high. Taller mattresses usually have more comfort layers; in a bed with a lift-up base, make sure the mattress is not too heavy and suits the depth of the frame.
Measure your bed
The mattress size has to match the inside dimensions of the bed frame. If you are only replacing the mattress, measure the inside of the bed – the gap between mattress and frame should not exceed 1–2 cm.
