Mattress topper or mattress protector – what is the difference?
In short
A mattress topper is a 4–8 cm layer of foam or latex that changes how soft and comfortable the mattress feels. A mattress protector is a thin washable cover against sweat, spills and allergens. Ideally use both: the topper on the mattress and the protector on top.
Toppers and protectors are often confused, but they do different jobs. Here is how they differ and which one you need.
A topper – for comfort
A topper is a 4–8 cm layer of foam, memory foam or latex placed on top of the mattress. It:
- softens a mattress that is too firm, or adds support;
- refreshes an older mattress you do not want to replace yet;
- joins two single mattresses into one even surface;
- protects the main mattress from wear.
A protector – for hygiene
A protector is a thin, often waterproof cover with elastic or a zip. It does not change the comfort, but it guards against sweat, spills, dust mites and allergens. It is easy to remove and wash, so the mattress stays clean longer.
Which one to choose?
- Mattress too firm or too soft – a topper.
- A new mattress you want to keep like new – a protector.
- Children, allergies or pets – a waterproof protector.
- You want comfort and hygiene – both: the topper on the mattress and the protector on top.
Size
Choose the topper and the protector in the same size as the mattress. For a protector the height matters too – the elastic has to fit around the mattress together with the topper.
